It’s already the end of July, so you know what that means: another quick list of the music you should be listening to. This month was packed with loads of new music to cushion the blow of summer almost being half over.
We really haven’t had a “song of the summer” yet this year, but Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” is a strong contender. This was not what I expected next from Demi after her punk-pop song “Really Don’t Care,” but this is such a jam. Her flirty, bi-curious lyrics make the song a little cheeky and the driving guitar makes for an intense, sexy summer hit. The video, released just this past week, shows Demi in various strappy bikinis, flooded with neon light and proving even more why this should be the 2015 summer hit.
Another song that is getting some radio attention is Halsey’s “New Americana.” Halsey is on one-way ticket to fame after gaining a huge underground following and now making big waves in the mainstream. “New Americana” could be called is a millennial anthem. “We are the new americana/High on legal marijuana/Raised on Biggie and Nirvana…” she belts as if speaking for a whole generation. This song is definitely her strongest single and, I think, her way to stardom. Be on the look out for her debut LP “Badlands” set to release August 28.
On of my all time favorite artists, Lianne La Havas, is also set to release an album this year. This absolutely gorgeous singer released her final single, “Green & Gold,” before her sophomore album “Blood” comes out. It’s a slow, jazzy ode to her Jamaican heritage. She plays a lovely, simple strumming guitar that accompanies her voice beautifully.
Spotify has been making it much easier recently to find new artists that you actually enjoy. They instituted a Discover Weekly playlist that refreshes every Monday with 30 songs handpicked based on what you listen to. It’s probably the best thing to ever happen to me. Through this playlist I found Clairity. She has a Marina & The Diamonds type voice but her music screams nerdy, gritty pop. Her song “DNA” perfectly encompasses her geeky aesthetic with lyrics like “gonna count up all the chromosomes, do the math, make a clone.” Sure, it’s a little ridiculous. But the music sounds very mature and it’s well-thought-out.
On the YouTube side of music, Luna Blake, formerly Ally Rhodes, released her first studio-produced single “Horizon.” It has a very indie-rock vibe with subtle hints of hip-hop. Blake has a breathy and sultry voice that fits so well with the song, making for a powerful first single. I’m looking forward to more music from Blake, but for the time being, check out her trippy video for “Horizon.”
Be sure to check out all these wonderful ladies; they are all making amazing music and if you have Spotify Premium, be sure to check out your Discover Weekly playlist. I have maybe 20 other songs I could have put in this post because of that feature, and it’s definitely worth a listen.
