Senior lacrosse player Matt Brown is having a breakout season, leading his team with 27 goals and helping the Pioneers to a 6-4 record and a current 15th ranking among NCAA Division I lacrosse teams.
“This season I worked hard in the off-season to get in better shape and be more of an all-around player. So far that has worked for me,” said Brown.
Along with the 27 goals that he has scored with just 37 shots on goal, he also has five assists and two game winning goals.
Brown has totaled 32 points, 12 more than Brett Koll who is second on the team with 20 points.
Brown came to DU from Burnaby, British Columbia, where he played lacrosse, baseball and hockey in high school.
Nicknamed “Brownie,” he has played in every game in his career at DU and in his freshman campaign scored a team-high 32 goals.
He also added eight assists to lead the team with 40 points and was named the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) rookie of the year.
“I was a nobody, so no other teams really knew me,” said Brown.
He added, “So they didn’t mark man me. I had free shots, lay ups and easy goals. The next two years they started to know me.”
Even though teams found out how good of a player he really was, he was still able to get through opposing defenses.
Once again lead the team with 20 goals and 26 points in his sophomore season.
Last year, he once again led the squad with 25 goals and four assists and was named to the GWLL second-team.
“Coach Jamie Munro has done a great job developing this program from Division III to now Division I and getting a great new stadium,” said Brown.
He added, “This program is going to continue to grow and lacrosse in general in Colorado is rising and the quality is getting much better.”
Brown has helped DU get to where they are, especially this season as he is helping lead the younger players and help build DU into a lacrosse powerhouse.
“Our whole senior class has done a great job of leading the underclassmen and vice versa. They have done a great job of following,” said Brown.
The Pioneers are coming off a tough weekend after their five-game winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon in a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Yale.
The following day they again suffered a tough loss, this time to No. 3 University of Virginia 9-6.
“Our goal before the season started was to win the GWLL outright and make the NCAA tournament,” said Brown. “We are starting to gel as a team and we are a tight nit group.”
With the season that Brown is having and a career that he has had in his time at DU, a professional lacrosse career looks like it is on the horizon.
“I would love to play lacrosse after college, especially in Colorado and for the Mammoth,” said Brown.
He said, “But my first priority is finding a job in the finance field and staying in the United States for at least a year after I graduate.”
But overall Brown enjoys the competition aspect of playing lacrosse.
“My favorite part about lacrosse is just being out on the field and competing,” said Brown.
The Pioneers will continue their conference play this weekend when they host Ohio State University Friday night. This will be the first ever night game at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
DU will close up the weekend with a game against Butler on Sunday, also at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
“I have never met a person that has gone to a lacrosse game and came back unhappy,” said Brown.
