Renee Nicole Good, age 37, was shot by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross on the morning of Jan. 14, in her car. Officials later claimed the shooting was an “act of self-defense” and that the FBI was investigating the incident.
Throughout the afternoon and into the early morning of the following day, protestors rallied against ICE agents, resulting in 30 detentions. Protestors organized to answer the following question: Did ICE agents cross an invisible line, and is there a moral boundary breached when government officials blindly carry out the interests and goals of the current administration?
The long-standing role of ICE encompasses managing illegal trade, immigration detention and working with departments like Homeland Security to evaluate and circumvent threats to the United States’ national security. So, is ICE taking away American rights and the rights of those who did not vote for Trump in 2024?
A right can be constitutional or universal, like human rights. Constitutional rights were violated under the First and Fourth Amendment. However, ICE’s mission is to “Protect America through criminal investigations and immigration enforcement to preserve national security and public safety.” According to the information from a lawsuit filed by Minneapolis and Minnesota officials against the federal government, the immigration enforcement surge that led to the fatal shooting of Good allegedly violates the U.S. Constitution.
Specifically, the lawsuit accuses the administration of violating First Amendment free speech rights by targeting a progressive state that favors Democrats. Additionally, general legal discussion surrounding constitutional claims against federal agents, like the ICE officer involved, often references the Fourth Amendment concerning unlawful searches and arrests. However, the ability to sue federal agents for constitutional violations is complex due to various immunities.
I believe that the deployment of ICE agents into liberal-leaning cities is an excessive use of power and display of force, control and coercion. ICE engaged in targeted retaliation after the 2024 presidential elections and since Trump took office the following January.
While Trump boasts moral superiority by protecting the protestors against the Iranian regime, like threatening to engage in strikes if Iran kills its protestors, he neglects his own people by repressing and targeting specific demographic minority groups. The contradictions of his domestic and foreign policy agendas highlight an ulterior motive to re-assuming the presidency during his second administration.
ICE’s immigration rhetoric was directed toward fulfilling Trump’s promises of removing criminals, claiming that Americans would be safer. But the use of force to detain mostly law-abiding citizens caused more unrest than justice by removing so-called criminals from the country. Already, we are seeing the impacts of ICE on liberal campuses, and the violence in Minneapolis do little to quell the citizens’ anxiety of who will be targeted next.
