The University of Denver women’s soccer team (2-8-2) faced off against University of  Portland (5-7-1) at Peter Barton Stadium on Oct. 17.

Despite the heat and sun beating down on the field, both teams came out with energy, setting the tone  for a competitive first half.

Portland threatened early on a free kick, but sophomore goalkeeper Lucy Garnsey and Denver’s defense worked together to clear the ball from the box and prevent a scoring opportunity.

Sophomore midfielder Olivia Kroska made a strong defensive stop early into the first half, diving to break up the play before quickly getting back on her feet to support her teammates.

Denver continued to pressure Portland’s defense, sending long crosses into the box, but Portland repeatedly cleared the ball to keep the Crimson and Gold from finding the net.

Sophomore defender Annie Philbin and senior defender Nora Zelanzy displayed strong communication and passing in the back half of the field, while senior midfielder Kera Nguyen and senior midfielder Liv Moritz relentlessly pressured Portland’s defensive line in search of a turnover.

Sophomore forward Camilia Palacios almost broke the deadlock, striking the ball just over the top-left corner of Portland’s goal.

On the sidelines, head coach Julianne Stich and assistant coach Marlon McKenzie remained vocal, directing players and advocating for Denver during contested calls.

Despite strong offensive efforts on both sides, neither team found the back of the net, leaving the score tied 0-0 at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Denver and Portland continued battling for a breakthrough despite the demanding heat. Both teams fought to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities as fatigue set in.

Portland’s Aliyah Dockter received a yellow card, awarding Denver a free kick. The Crimson and Gold looked to capitalize but were unable to score.

Sophomore forward/defender Kacey Harvey continued applying pressure in Portland’s half, sliding to challenge for possession.

Denver came close to taking the lead when freshman forward Caitlin Staats received a cross inside Portland’s box and fired a shot toward the goal. However, Portland’s goalkeeper Sophia Hills tipped the ball just wide of the right post to make the save.

Portland responded with increased pressure in Denver’s half, but Garnsey delivered an impressive diving save that energized the Denver bench and sideline. Moments later, Portland sent a shot just over Denver’s crossbar.

Tensions rose with less than a minute left in the game when Portland appeared to score. Officials ruled the play offside, keeping the match scoreless.

Despite late pressure from both sides, neither team was able to break through, and the match ended 0-0.

Denver will travel to San Francisco to face the University of San Francisco on Oct. 24.
