As we enter the new year, we wonder what is going to be popular in the months ahead. In 2025, we saw many trends such as Canadian tuxedos, Sambas and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI).

What will be popular in 2026? Everyone on the internet seems to have different predictions. I sat down with my thoughts, consulted a few friends, listened to Emma Chamberlain’s podcast episode “my 2026 fashion trend predictions” and came up with my list of ins and outs for 2026.

Let’s begin with some ins…

Painting (specifically paint by numbers): Okay I am a little biased here as I have loved using this as a way to wind down but I do think 2026 is the year for creativity. People are realizing that they are spending too much time “doomscrolling” and painting offers a perfect, peaceful way to free your mind. It also gives you some DIY wall decor!

YouTube: Since TikTok has gained popularity in 2018, YouTube has been out. It’s  time we bring it back, lengthen our attention spans and watch some vlogs.

Statement skirts: Maybe this one is controversial but skirts have risen in popularity and it’s time to add more personality to them. As dressing business casual has become more popular, there is a larger need to add some edge to an outfit. Texture and brighter colors are so 2026. If you don’t agree with me, take it up with Vogue

Anklets: Emma Chamberlain believes that toe rings will be in and I disagree, but I can take her up on anklets. Super cute, super chic. Let’s normalize them.

Brooches: This is a simple way to add a lot to a business casual outfit. Maybe we won’t be seeing this at the Pioneer Bar but this will become even more of a staple at award shows. Again, take this one up with Vogue if you disagree.

Magnets: It’s such an easy souvenir that adds so much personality to a space. My fridge is full of stories.

Cardigans: We’ve seen a spike of business casual clothing in the past few years. The cardigan is here to stay and its versatility and simplicity will allow it to continue gaining more popularity.

Self Care: More self love in 2026! Buying flowers for yourself, skin care, better sleep routines and mindfulness are in. This has been growing over the past few years but these routines and self appreciation will stay in this new year.

Now some outs…

Snapchat: The platform has been decreasing in popularity over the years but as the company has limited the amount of “memories” an account can hold it is really out. Sorry Snapchat, I have better things to spend my money on.

Virtual Interviews: You work hard on an application and then get sent a link to do a virtual interview with pre-recorded questions or a robot. Interviews like Hirevue are stressful to the interviewee, plus it reduces the human interaction aspect of interviewing.

Netflix: Netflix is currently trying to negotiate to purchase Warner Bros. Yes, this will expand their library while allowing the opportunity for more deals but they will have to go into debt for this purchase. This could cause economic difficulties for the company, along with public critique regarding the potential monopolization of media. I believe that this is going to cause anger within many and will lead to boycotts of Netflix.

Stanley Cups: Don’t get me wrong I do love my Stanley but with other water bottle companies such as Owala, I believe their time might be coming to an end.

Fat Shack: I’m sorry to DU students who may not agree with me. Options for late night snacks such as PitaFresh will continue rising in popularity. Sorry, I’m just done spending $9.00 on mozzarella sticks.

I appreciate you hearing some predictions for 2026. From clothing to Fat Shack, I am interested to see what this year brings. What are your ins and outs for 2026?
