A DU student walked away uninjured after he was hit by a van while on his bike on the corner of South University Boulevard and East Evans Avenue last Tuesday afternoon.

The van hit sophomore Cory Madden, who was heading to play croquet with a friend, after colliding with a blue Dodge truck.

The collision sent the van spinning across the intersection and into Madden’s bike, according to Campus Safety.

Though both of the drivers involved were taken to the hospital, neither sustained any serious injuries.

Madden was treated at the scene and released.

Madden was somewhat shaken by the accident.

“That’s my bike,” Madden said, pointing to the crushed bicycle poking from under the van. “Well, it was my bike.”

Madden was not injured, despite the damage to his bike, probably because the van wasn’t moving very fast when it hit him.

Authorities believe that the driver of the blue truck may have had a seizure, which caused the initial collision.

According to Campus Safety’s report and witness accounts, the van was in the westbound turn lane of East Evans Avenue and was attempting to make a legal left turn onto South University Boulevard.

The blue truck hit the van as it attempted to make the same left turn much faster and illegally.

The collision caused the van to spin into Madden’s bike and sent the blue truck up over the curb and onto campus property.

“The collision spun the van around causing it to rest on the east bound lane of East Evans Avenue and sending the truck out of control across the curb and onto DU property where it hit a light pole and then took out several larger bushes before coming to a stop outside of the Margery Reed Hall building,” said Associate Director of Campus Safety Tyrone Mills.

Paramedics, Denver Police Department officers and Campus Safety were at the scene within minutes.

The front end of the van was smashed and the front end of Madden’s bike was crushed by the collision.

The truck, which came to rest some 200 yards away had torn open one of its front tires and sustained significant damage to the front end.

“We were just finishing up class and we heard a big explosion,” said sophomore Tucker Plumlee, who witnessed the accident while his class was taking a campus tour.

“I thought I saw the blue truck glance off the van, careen across the intersection up over the lawn and hit the lamp post. It [the blue truck] is so lucky it didn’t hit the tree or the building,” Plumlee said.

The damages to DU property totaled nearly $4,000.

The total extent of the damage to the vehicles involved is unknown.
