SENIOR DU FORWARD, Robert Rice (Kingwood, Texas) earned Player of the Week honors as from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation last week.
Rice earned the award for his outstanding offensive leadership in helping the University of Denver men’s soccer team to two wins last weekend.
Rice scored three goals and provided help with an assist. His scoring including the game-winner in Denver’s 3-2 win over UMKC a week ago. On Sunday the senior scored twice, once again firing the game-winner into the net during a 2-0 shutout against St. Mary’s.
The Sept. 29 game was the third time in the last four games that a late Rice goal has brought the Pioneers to victory. On Friday, September 20, Denver got the final goal in the 87th minute, as the senior forward took a Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) through ball in on a breakaway and beat Elon’s goalkeeper low for the game-winning goal.
On, Sept. 27, Denver took the lead for good when Rice took a long ball from junior Brian Kneuer (Littleton, Colo.) and beat the Kangaroos’ keeper with 5:03 left on the clock.
The Kingwood, Texas native leads Denver in scoring with five goals and 12 points this season. Rice is tied for third in points per game (1.20) and goals per game (0.50) in the MPSF latest statistics (Sept. 29).
The men’s soccer team will be playing tomorrow at the Colorado School of Mines at 3 p.m.
