This past summer featured many films that brought joy, terror, laughter and every emotion in between. There were highlights and flops, but the next five movies took the cake as the most interesting summer releases from 2026.
First, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”: A retelling of Homer’s Classic poem developed into a high-budget epic that replicates the original book’s themes of loyalty towards those you love and human misdeeds.
Nolan’s directorial skill is amply on display, producing stellar performances from the star-studded cast that rounds out one of the most complete and polished films from not just this past summer, but the year as a whole.
Up next is “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” a sequel to the 2006 comedy-drama fan favorite. The film depicts corporate intervention in the fashion industry, and the efforts of the main character, Andy Sachs played by Anne Hathaway, to save Prada after a five hundred million dollar cut to their budget. This revisit into the office of the worst boss in the world and the high stakes of luxury fashion is heartwarming and fun. It’s worth an afternoon connecting with the lovable returning cast of characters that are played by some of Hollywood’s most renowned actors, such as Meryl Streep’s masterful performance of Miranda Priestly, the CEO of Prada, or Emily Blunt’s ruthless portrayal of Emily, a ruthless critique rival to Andy.
“Mortal Kombat 2” a sequel to Simon McQuoid 2021 action videogame adaptation, fights its way into this list with a ferocious punch of action followed by rapid kicks of emotional weight which carry this film to a rewarding and satisfying ending. It’s fast, exciting and adds a nice bit of Karl Urban humor that brings ample laughter to one of the highest octane action movies released this summer.
“Obsession” Curry Baker’s directorial debut brings everything to the table in terms of quality. A terrifying concept that turns into a worst case scenario doesn’t hold back in delivering a brilliant exploration of wanting, and actually getting what you are not supposed to have.
The real-world repercussions for a man who wishes for his crush’s unrequited love are devastatingly highlighted in one of the best ending sequences featured in this list, and certainly of the 2026 summer film season. This film is adored by fans, and already considered a horror classic burgeoning with talent from one of the best directorial debuts to date.
“Hokum” a horror thriller written and directed by Damian McCarthy portrays reconnection with the self after accidentally and irrevocably hurting someone you love. The redemption of the main character Ohm, played by Adam Scott, comes from his investigation into a series of murders in a hotel his parents used to take him to when he was a child and the sinister plot of the killer.
This film hits horror beats better than any from this summer. “Hokum” brings plenty of terror along the way to an ending that reminds us that change is always possible even in the face of great trauma and paranormal entities that stalk you at every turn..
Despite personal preference or your mood, these selections will have you on the edge of your seat. Make sure to grab popcorn because these 2026 summer selections are sure to entertain no matter what you want to watch.
