With week five of Winter Quarter coming to a close, the Latine Student Alliance (LSA) hosted a Café con Pan event Wednesday night to provide students with a safe space for them to take a break from studying and enjoy some company with their peers.
The event consisted of pan dulce (sweet bread), a favorite Latin dessert with various flavored conchas (sweet bread). There were a variety of beverages including juice, hot tea and coffee. Latin music played in the background as students chatted with their peers or studied in the presence of one another.
LSA Vice-President Johanna Majano, a junior at the University of Denver, shared her thoughts on why having an event such as Café con Pan is so important for marginalized groups within the DU community.
“It’s good to always have a space to feel welcome and be with people of similar backgrounds. With LSA, we are able to embrace our culture, come together and be one another’s support system as we all work towards the same goal [graduating] but go through different journeys,” Majano said.
Majano emphasized how many members of LSA are heavily involved in the community and around campus. As midterms week was in full effect, stress levels were high and students were cramming time to study for upcoming tests. LSA took the initiative to host an event to bring the community together, socialize and provide an additional study space. All those in attendance were energetically talking amongst their peers and enjoying what appeared to be a much-needed break.
