The DU men’s golf team spent last week in Cle Elum, Wash. for the NCAA Cle Elum Regional, where they competed in hopes of advancing to the national regional tournament. DU had come off winning the Summit League Championship and faced some of the nation’s top collegiate golf programs—including Wake Forest, Pepperdine and Florida.
On Monday, the first day of the regional, Denver put up a team score of an even par (284 for the course). This put them tied for eighth place after one round of play. Junior Cal McCoy (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the way for DU, shooting two under par to finish tied for 12th at the end of the day. Junior Carson Griggs (Sand Springs, Okla.) was the next winning player of the day, tying for 15th by finishing one under par.
Tuesday’s round 2 was the bright spot of the tournament for the Crimson and Gold. DU moved up to seventh place, putting them just two shots away from being in the top five teams and preventing them from a spot in the national tournament. Griggs moved into a tie for 10th place and recorded 5 birdies on the day. Senior Jackson Solem (Longmont, Colo.) moved up two spots, putting him at a tie for 24th place.
To wrap up the competition on Wednesday, Denver came close to qualifying for the national tournament for the first time in 61 years. But they did not reach the mark, landing one sport short by coming in sixth place. The team posted a score of 9 over par. Griggs came out as the winningest DU athlete of the weekend, tying for ninth at two under par. The fifth spot was taken by Florida, who was just three shots ahead of DU. East Tennessee State won the tournament, finishing 14 under par.
With the exception of a couple players who are competing individually in national golf and tennis tournaments, DU athletics have wrapped up for the school year. Next week, the Clarion will publish our DU Athletics awards and recognize the best of what Denver’s 17 varsity sports have accomplished this year.
