By this point, it’s impossible to encounter the movie industry without hearing Bradley Cooper’s name. Acclaimed for many films, including the popular “Hangover” trilogy, “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Cooper enters the directorial scene with his stunning debut, “A Star is Born,” alongside Lady Gaga (“American Horror Story”). The third remake of the original 1937 film of the same name, “A Star is Born” has received critical acclaim and global recognition for jaw-dropping performances from Cooper and Gaga.
The plot follows alcoholic singer-songwriter legend Jackson Maine and his mentee-slash-love-interest, Ally, who he meets by chance at a drag bar. Struck by Ally’s innate talent and passion for singing, Maine, portrayed by Cooper, guides her through the world of professional music and soon falls in love with her. He is not alone; audiences would be hard-pressed to dislike Ally, played by Gaga, whose determination, ferocity and iron will are recognizable in the trials and turmoil of everyday life. Her love of singing carries into her love for Maine, and viewers will be struck by the electrifying chemistry and devotion shared between Cooper’s and Gaga’s characters. But what makes “A Star is Born” so phenomenal is the combination of a tremendous cast and performances that will leave the audience in tears.
With a wide range of vocals, the songs of “A Star is Born” are practically characters themselves, featuring the triumph of “Shallow,” the movement of “Always Remember Us This Way” and the tear-jerking “I’ll Never Love Again.” Unsurprisingly a Grammy nominee contender, the album for “A Star is Born” is already gaining popularity. “A Star is Born” is funny, gut-wrenching and achingly authentic, despite the common “rags-to-riches” plot line. Ally’s determination and stunning vocals make it easy for audiences to understand why the music industry is immediately captivated by her, much like Gaga’s own rise to fame. Considering this has been the third remake of a classic movie, it’s difficult to say that there won’t be another—but there is no doubt that nothing will be able to fill the shoes 2018’s “A Star is Born” has left behind.
