Throughout campus there are signs around campus outlining the ban on “single-person motorized vehicles.” Which raises the questions: What is a single-person motorized vehicle? Where can you use one?

According to Campus Safety, the use of single-person motorized vehicles on campus paths is prohibited. This means any vehicle designed to carry one person that has a motor, including scooters, skateboards, one wheels, solo wheels and electric unicycles. Basically, anything with a motor (either fuel or electric) cannot be used on campus paths. This does not include University vehicles or motorized wheelchairs.

Shared ride or dockless mobility vehicles, such as Bird scooters, are included in the ban. They may not be taken inside campus buildings and may not be charged on campus property. When not on campus paths, Campus Security encourages users to follow common safety practices when riding motorized vehicles—yield to non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians.

This ban on motorized vehicles is simply a safety concern, as these vehicles can often exceed 20 miles per hour and cause safety hazards for pedestrians and those on non-motorized vehicles. Remember to always be careful and cognizant of your surroundings when traversing campus paths whether riding a bike, scooter, skateboard or just walking to avoid crashes. More information can be found on the Policies Page of the campus security website or by calling 303-871-2334.
