On Feb. 23, Laura Maresca, Interim Vice Chancellor of Human Resources and Eric Butler, Interim Title IX Coordinator, sent an email to the DU community regarding a letter issued by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) on Feb. 22. According to the email, “The letter stated that OCR would no longer be relying on guidance documents issued in 2015 and 2016 relating to the protection of transgender students under Title IX.”

The purpose of the email sent to the DU community was to inform DU’s position regarding this matter.

“In light of this development, we wish to clarify that the University of Denver’s own Equal Opportunity policy and procedures remain in place and expressly prohibit harassment, discrimination or violence against any person on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. DU will continue to follow this policy adopted in 2007. This will not change.”

The email also noted that on top of DU’s own policies, DU must operate within Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act which prohibits harassment and discrimination on the basis of sex, which extends to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Maresca and Butler invited the community to an information session which will take place on Feb. 24 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commerce Room (DSC 127) in the Driscoll Student Center.

Questions and concerns may be sent to either Maresca (laura.maresca@du.edu) or Butler (eric.butler@du.edu).
