Deep on South Broadway sits the small and somewhat unassuming Adelita’s Cocina Y Cantina. The restaurant looks a bit average from the outside, but make no mistake: this is not the case at all.
If critical accolades are your thing, consider this: Adelita’s has won Westword’s Best of Denver Best House Margarita for three years in a row and was also nominated for Best Restaurant on Broadway, Best Tacos, Best Tamales, Best Gluten-Free Menu and Best Vegetarian Green Chile this year alone. If all you need is a friendly recommendation from a Grinder who knows her Mexican food, then take it from me–Adelita’s is a must-go for anyone who loves Mexican cuisine.
The charming interior of the restaurant is covered in touches of kitschy Mexicana, like black-and-white photos of the Mexican revolution, strings of papel picado, a painting of a woman in a traditional Mexican dress and a plethora of vibrant colors. However, it never feels overwhelming, instead adding a nice energy to the space.
For those first-time Adelita’s visitors, I would highly recommend visiting the spot on a Tuesday, during which the restaurant offers $1 tacos from from 11 a.m. until midnight. Let me tell you, this is definitely worth it—although everything on the menu is delicious, the tacos take the cake. They’re of the authentic, small variety, so you can easily eat your way through $5 or $6 worth of tacos on a good night.
I had several varieties of tacos, including carne asada (regular $8.95 for three), carnitas (regular $8.95 for three) and camarones (regular $10.95 for three), all of which were absolutely delicious. There is, of course, a variety of other flavors to choose from, so go wild.
The menu also offers traditional Mexican fare like fajitas ($15.95), tortas ($8.95), tamales ($11.95) and burritos ($8.95), among many others. It’s worth noting that a majority of their menu is gluten free, and there are many vegetarian options available as well.
If you’re in the neighborhood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a weekend, Adelita’s also has a large brunch menu with classics like huevos rancheros ($8.95) and breakfast burritos ($8.95), along with slightly more adventurous options like pozole ($10.95).
In terms of drinks, the over 21 crowd can’t go wrong with a house margarita, regular $5 and $4 during the restaurant’s happy hours (3 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to close), although there are plenty of other options as well, most notably mezcal—a Mexican distilled liquor, of which the restaurant always has a featured variety.
The bottom line is that Adelita’s has amazing food, a friendly and fun atmosphere and, if you keep up with their deals and specials, is a reasonably priced place to enjoy the finer things in life—namely, Mexican food.
