On April 4, Chancellor Chopp and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Gregg Kivstad sent an email to the DU community announcing the appointment of Bruce Smith as the new dean of the Sturm College of Law.

“The University of Denver has appointed Bruce Smith, as dean of its Sturm College of Law, effective July 1, 2016. Smith comes to DU from the University of Illinois College of Law where he has served as a tenured professor since 2006, as Guy Raymond Jones Faculty Scholar since 2009, and as dean from 2009 to 2014,” stated the email to the community. “He replaces Dean Martin Katz, who will return to the law school’s faculty after seven years of leading the law school through more progressive change and increased public recognition.”

According to the email sent to the community, Smith has several attributes that make him the right candidate for the position.

“Smith brings precisely the right experience, leadership qualities and ambition to continue the impressive trajectory of our Sturm College of Law,” stated the email. “His experience as a dean, his distinguished scholarship, his commitment to innovative legal education and his commitment to interdisciplinary and cross-school programming are exactly what we need.”

More information about Smith can be found in DU’s announcement to the community here.
