UPDATE (4:52 p.m.): At 4:40 p.m., Campus Safety issued an ALL CLEAR Alert: “Campus Safety and the Denver Police Department have searched the area. At this time no suspect has been contacted, but the area has been declared clear.

Remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior to Campus Safety immediately.”

On May 7 at 3:30 p.m., a DU Alert was sent out to the DU community explaining that, “The Department of Campus Safety has received reports of a male wearing a black jacket entering the Ritchie Center carrying an assault rifle.”

Denver Police and Campus Safety are currently on scene, looking for the reported gunman.

“We just have a report of a suspicious person, possibly with a weapon,” said Campus Safety Officer Bradley Chaddick. “We don’t have video confirmation yet, but we have the police going through right now and checking all the nooks and crannies. There is no solid confirmation that the man has a gun. We received an anonymous call and are just blocking people from going that way.”

About one hour later at 4:23 p.m., another DU Alert was sent out explaining that, “Campus Safety has received a new report of a 30 year old white male wearing a red jacket carrying a handgun in the area of the Newman Center.”

The Clarion does not have any further details on either reports. Both stories are developing. Those on campus and in the surrounding DU area should seek shelter and stay indoors.
