DU’ women’s soccer team cruised to two consecutive shutout victories this past weekend, extending their streak in the Sun Belt Conference to 20 wins in a row.
The Pioneers claimed a 7-0 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars on Friday and a 6-0 win over Troy on Sunday, improving their season record to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the SBC.
The Pioneers were able to find the net on Friday seven times, as senior midfielder Kari Storslett had a goal and two assists, junior forward Kalie Vaugn knocked two in, and freshman midfielder Anna Willis and sophomore Nicholette DiGiacomo each scored a goal and recorded an assist. Junior midfielder Katy Van Lieshout and sophomore forward Kristen Hamilton also scored a goal each. Sophomore forward Cassidy Larson aided the team with two assists.
“I thought that we played some really good soccer [Friday],” said head coach Jeff Hooker. “I thought that we kept the integrity of the game going and defended well as a team, which helped us attack and get more goals.”
Despite the seven-goal outpour, the team did not find twine until minute 40 when sophomore midfielder Sara Riazi passed to Storslett, scoring the first goal.
Storslett then passed to Hamilton to score another goal 14 seconds later going into halftime.
The Pioneers scored again in the 47th minute, the 51st minute and the 62nd minute. Vaugn kicked the last two in to win the game.
A combined effort between junior goalkeepers Maria Khan and Lara Campbell propelled DU to their fifth shutout of the season on Friday, and Campbell, Kahn and sophomore Amelia Davis shared the job for the sixth shutout on Sunday.
In contrast to DU’s high-scoring games, not a single goal has been allowed by Pioneer goalies in the last 377 minutes of play.
“We have a lot of depth in the back as you saw [Sunday],” said Hooker. “Our goalies are playing well.”
Hamilton scored quickly in the fifth minute from an assist from DiGiacomo, who stretched the lead to 2-0 in the ninth minute with a one-on-one with the goalie.
Hamilton also scored in the 15th minute and again shortly after for her 11th goal of the season.
Sophomore defender Katie Feltch scored the first goal of her career off a rebound, and Vaughn scored in the 54th and 57th minutes, giving her a total of seven goals this season.
“I thought our performance was very good,” said Hooker. “We had a great game on Friday, moved the ball really well and got rewarded with a lot of goals. [Sunday] was a lot of the same. I thought we came out flying and buzzing around.”
The Pioneers continue SBC play as they head to Florida to take on Florida Atlantic Friday at 5 p.m. and Florida International
