The Pioneers finished strong at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, winning the Red Flight Singles and Doubles crowns at the Aztec Tennis Center Sunday. DU junior Fabio Biasion claimed the Red Singles Flight after defeating San Diego State’s Freddy Gelbrich 6-1, 6-4 and finishing the weekend 3-0. Biasion teamed with freshman Othar Kordsachia to win the Red Flight Doubles title after a 9-8 win over SDSU’s Hunter Nicholas and Jose Sierra Short.

what went wrong

At the Aztec Invitational, junior Jens Vorkefeld lost in three sets to Sacramento State’s Aliaksandr Malko in the singles finals.

The Pioneers will hit the court again Oct. 19 at the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas.

what went right

The Pioneers dropped UALR 3-0 on Saturday in the Trojans’ first home loss of the season (25-23, 25-15, 25-13). Redshirt freshman Cassie Ronda led the Pioneers with 12 kills, while junior Faimie Kingsley tallied 10 kills and eight blocks. Redshirt senior Julia Cawthra contributed 40 assists, eight digs and two blocks.

what went wrong

The Pioneers lost their second SBC match of the season to the Arkansas State Warhawks Friday night (26-24, 18-25, 15-25, 20-25). DU fell 3-1 to the Warhawks, despite a victory in the first set and outstanding play from redshirt freshman Kate Oakes, who tallied eight kills and seven digs.

Up next, the Pioneers will host Louisiana-Lafayette in Hamilton Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Friday.
