Cancer claims
life of former
women’s basketball player
Former DU standout basketball player Karla Kramer Brown passed away last week after a two-year battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Brown played for the Pioneers from 1976-1980 where she was one of four players to receive a scholarship. During her freshman season in 1976-1977, Brown helped the Pioneers to a perfect 12-0 record. As her career at DU went on, Brown and the Pioneers advanced to three AIAW Regional Tournaments, including a second round birth in her junior season.
She remains 14th in all-time career-scoring list with 1,159 points and fourth overall in career rebounds with 826 (7.4 rpg). Brown also holds the DU women’s basketball record for 23 rebounds in a single game against the Colorado School of Mines.
In April of 2009, Brown was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. She is survived by her husband, Mike, and their three children, Dylan, Mack and Maddie.
A service to remember the life of Karla Kramer Brown took place on Oct. 8 in Caldwell, Idaho. Karla was last on campus as she was honored by DU women’s basketball at the Pink Zone game on Feb. 16.
