It was the type of weekend the DU women’s lacrosse team needed going into a big match-up with No. 14 ranked Hofstra this Friday. The Pioneers (3-1) won 19-7 at Virginia Tech on Friday and followed it up with a convincing 20-9 win at Longwood University on Sunday.
On Friday the women were looking to avenge a 11-10 overtime loss to the Hokies last season and they did exactly that as they took a 5-0 lead to the start game and never looked back. Tech answered with three goals, but then DU put in 13 straight goals to put the game away.
“I think the Virginia Tech game definitely was our best game yet. We hustled up and down the field and worked as a unit,” said junior goalkeeper Becky Childs.
Sophomore Karen Morton led the way with six goals, senior Kristie Leggio contributed four goals and three assists, freshman Ali Flury had four goals and senior Steph Coyne had two goals and assists. The Pioneers outshot Virginia Tech 40 to 17 in the game and Childs got the victory in goal.
“The key to our success this weekend was that we really started trusting each other and we took we normally wouldn’t have taken and they paid off,” said Childs.
On Sunday the goals continued for DU as they defeated Longwood 20 to 9 and out shot them 45 to 21 on the game.
Flury continued her stellar freshman campaign with five goals and an assist, Leggio had four goals, junior Megan Carver had two, senior Jessica Lodders put in two and seven other players put in one goal apiece.
Last season the ladies started the season 13-2 and they are off to similar success this season as they currently hold a three-game winning streak and are on the verge of breaking into the Insidelacrosse.com national poll.
“This three game winning streak is a great opportunity for us to continue to raise the bar. We are excited to keep it going,” said Childs.
The Pioneers will look to keep it going this weekend when they travel to No. 14 Hofstra on Friday and at Stony Brook on Sunday.
