This section gives a review of what happened in sports last week.Well let me tell you, sure hockey season has finally gotten started, but right now there is one sport keeping me on the edge of my seat, and yes it is college football. Each Saturday brings exciting game after exciting game and boy do I wish that DU had a football team, but the local teams are not doing too poorly this season.Colorado has finally been ranked, earning the number 24 ranking with a 4-1 record, with the only loss coming to Miami. The Rams up at Ft. Collins have won three straight, have a 3-2 record and have yet to lose a conference game.I am from Los Angeles and could not be happier with how the home town team, or should I say teams, are doing. With USC once again tearing up teams left and right, there is another team trying to share some of the spotlight and that woud be the boys from Westwood, UCLA. The Bruins had an impressive come from behind win this weekend over CAL and have moved up to no. 12 in the rankings. The game of the week is definitly between the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and USC. The men of Troy continue to struggle in the first half, but the second half has been a much different story as they dominate teams.Teams that you might be seeing in the Rose Bowl this year could be 6-0 Texas, 6-0 Virginia Tech and 5-0 Georgia.Moving on to my favorite of all sports, basketball. The NBA has finally started their pre-season schedule and another year of uncertainty begins. The Spurs are no lock to win a second straight title, even though they feature newly acquired Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel. The New Jersey Nets should be near the top of the Eastern Conference with Vince Carter, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson. Also never forget the Miami Heat with big daddy Shaq, Dwayne Wade and newly acquired Antoine Walker. Also the spotlight will be on the Lakers Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant and their never-ending drama. Never forget my beloved Los Angeles Clippers, with newly acquired Sam Cassell and the young talent of Elton Brand, Corey Maggete, Shaun Livingston and company.Moving on to steroids, oh sorry, I mean baseball. With playoffs underway, steroids are finally out of the headlines and playoff drama is at full scale. From Houston and Atlanta’s 18-inning marathon, to the White Sox sweeping the defending champs, the Boston Red Sox, to the Angels and Yankees exciting series.Bud Selig can’t be happier with how this season is ending and how the fans and media are finally forgetting about steroids.Who will win the World Series? That is the question, isnt it? Even though I am an L.A. boy and like the Angels, I have to say that the White Sox will win the American League. In the National League, I think the Houston Astros will upset the Cardinals. The White Sox will then defeat the Astros to win their first World Series since 1906 and complete part of the curse on Chicago. The NFL season so far has brought many surprises. Who would have ever thought the Bengals would be 4-1 or the Redskins 3-1 or Tampa Bay 4-1 and the Packers 1-4!? I think Brett Favre might have to finally call it quits. The Colts continue to roll at 5-0 and the San Diego Chargers chould be a serious Super Bowl contender. Also I have to say thank God that the Terrell Owens drama is out of the news and the Eagles are 3-2.Finally it is time for some trivia, what was the last team to win three straight NCAA Ice Hockey National Championships? The answer will be in the next edition of The Sports Beat. Also, don’t forget to tune into http://kvdu.du.edu every Monday night to listen to yours truly and Nelson Johnson on “The Sports Show” from 10 p.m. to midnight.
