Men’s Tennis: Former DU coach Geoff Young made his first appearance back in Denver and led his No. 34 Minnesota Gophers to a 4-3 victory over the Pioneers on Saturday.
No. 62 Pioneers fell to 1-1 on the season and were led by juniors Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson. The two won their doubles match 8-1 and Holmstrom won his singles match 6-1 and 6-2 and Persson his 6-7, 6-3 and 7-6.
Holmstrom is currently ranked No. 21 in the country as a singles player. Senior Timo Kienle and junior Kalle Rosen are ranked No. 44 as double partners. Rosen and Kienle won their doubles match over the weekend 8-6.
The men will next be in action Feb. 3 when they travel to take on no. 44 Texas Tech.
Women’s Tennis: The No. 58 Pioneers pulled off the upset over the weekend as they defeated No. 34 Arizona in style, 5-2 at the Pinehurst Country Club.
DU (2-1) won all three of its double matches and four of its six single matches on their way to victory.
Sophomore Annette Aksdal (6-4, 6-2), senior Marisa Mechem (6-4, 6-4), freshman Ute Schnoy (6-2, 6-7, 10-6) and senior Rachel Sackmaster (6-2, 6-4) all picked up single victories.
The Pioneers will next be in action this Saturday when they travel to take on Indiana State at Iowa City, Iowa. They will then take on Iowa on Sunday and return home on Feb. 9 when they host Oregon.
