The Pioneer men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated in double dual meets against the Air Force Academy, the Colorado School of Mines and Nebraska Kearney on Saturday afternoon in El Pomar Natatorium.
This was DU’s second meet of the season.
The men’s team defeated Air Force 138-102 and Mines 183-57 in a double dual. The Pioneers won nine of 11 individual events as well as both relay swims.
Senior Blake Worsley and freshman Clayton Myers each tallied multiple individual victories in the men’s events.
“We’re really excited. We’re starting in a better place than we did last year,” head coach Brian Schrader said. “Blake Worsley had a great meet, he swam a hard combination of events and really came through for us.”
The women won all eight of their individual events in addition to both relay swims, beating the Mines 175-44 and Nebraska Kearney 174-43.
In all ten women’s swimming events, the Pioneers dominated capturing first, second and third places.
The Pioneer women opened with a win in the 200-medley relay, as senior Michele Lowry, freshmen Emily Kuhr, Jackie Leung and Kristin Schmid finished with a time of 1:49.41, edging out teammates sophomore Katy Motsinger, junior Sterling Slocum, sophomore Melissa Greeves and senior Dara Wong, whose time was 1:49.55.
Junior Amanda McNally captured Denver’s first individual win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:34.00, more than eight seconds in front of fellow Pioneer junior Lindsay Brown.
Junior Olivia Dean took first in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with 1:55.94. Sophomore Melissa Greeves finished in second with 1:56.15 and Lowry took third.
Finishing with a time of 24.66 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle was Schmid followed by sophomore Hayley Ettelson and freshman Samantha Case.
In the 200-yard invidual medley, freshman Megan Foley recorded her first career-win with a time of 2:12.50, just in front of freshman Lisa Ginder whose time was 2:12.91. Ginder then went on to take first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.06.
In the following 100-yard events, Greeves took first in freestyle, with 52.83, and Schmid captured her second win in backstroke with a time of 1:00.02, a mere nine-one hundredths of a second ahead of Leung who finished with 1:00.11.
Sophomore Grace Kittle took first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.63) and sophomore Shannon Sullivan took first in 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.70).
The women’s final event was the 200-yard freestyle relay, and they continued to dominate the meet as Motsinger, sophomore Kaylee Gaman, Ginder and Case finished with a time of 1:40.95, almost 15 seconds ahead of Nebraska-Kearney (1:45.43).
In diving, freshman Elizabeth Yovich placed first with a score of 223.65.
The men captured their first win in the 200-yard medley as seniors Daniel Vollmer, Nicholas Brunger, sophomores Garth Summers and Scott Madaras finished with a time of 1:33.05.
Next, Myers finished the 1000-yard freestyle with a final time of 9:43.35, four seconds ahead of Worsley, who came in second at 9:47.42.
Worsley swam back-to-back events with the 200-yard freestyle next, this time taking first with a time of 1:41.79.
Air Force edged out Denver in the 50-yard freestyle, eight-hundredths of a second ahead of Madaras.
Brunger claimed first with 1:55.25 in the 200-yard IM, while Summers captured the 100-yard butterfly with 50.14.
Worsley notched his second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle with a final time of 46.54.
Vollmer dominated the 100-yard backstroke on 50.65 and Myers won his second individual event in the 500-yard freestyle with 4:42.32.
Senior Aaron Feight placed first in both diving events with a final score of 350.600 for 1-meter dive and 379.30 in the 3-meter.
The Pioneers will compete against the University of Utah on Saturday in Salt Lake City.
