The University of Denver men’s tennis team finished their season this past weekend with matches against Boise State and The University of Colorado.
The Pioneers opened the weekend up on Saturday night with their final home match of the season against Boise State in front of a large and rowdy DU fan base. Denver played well throughout the night, but fell 6-1 to the Broncos.
Sunday afternoon Denver traveled up to Boulder to take on the Buffaloes and fell 5-2 in their final regular season match of the year. With the losses DU dropped to 12-7 on the season.
On Saturday, the Pioneers were without regular No. 1 player Adam Holmstrom who was out with an illness.
Sophomore Niklas Persson and senior Viktor Zetterholm won Denver’s only double match 8-2 over Steve Robertson and Clancy Shields of Boise State. Sophomore Kalle Rosen and freshman Aljosa Nipic lost the No. 3 doubles match 8-3 and No. 1 team, senior Nejc Smole and senior Steve Flaks lost a 8-6 decision.
Zetterholm opened up singles play for Denver with a tough 1-6, 5-7 defeat to Robertson. Persson also put up a good fight, but fell 5-7, 6-2 and 8-10 in singles play.
In front of a very loud crowd the No. 1 singles match was played and Smole definitly played off of the crowd for a 7-5, 7-5 win over Luke Shields. Shields is currently ranked the 29th best player in college tennis. The win was Denver’s only singles win on the evening.
Boise State is currently ranked 22nd in the nation and has a 18-6 record on the season.
The 63rd ranked Pioneers continued play on Easter Sunday up at Boulder and suffered a 5-2 loss to the Buffaloes.
Holmstrom returned to the line-up and teamed up with Smole for a doubles match win over Marko Bundalo and Eric Molnar, 8-6. But, CU claimed wins on the No. 2 and no. 3 doubles matches and had a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Smole collected Denver’s only singles win with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 win over Peter Bjork of Colorado.
Denver will finish up their season this weekend in Mobile, Ala. at The Sun Belt Conference Championships.
The Lady Pioneers finished out the regular season on April 7 and 8 in Stillwater, Okla. They opened up the weekend with a 4-3 loss to Oklahoma State, but followed it up with a 4-3 win over Tulsa.
DU got singles wins from senior Suzana Maksovic, freshman Kyla Iwinski and freshman Lorinda Boothman in the win over Tulsa. The Pioneers finished the season with a 8-11 record.
The ladies will also next be in action this weekend at The Sun Belt Conference Championships.
