It was a weekend that perhaps summarized the season for the DU men’s golf team. The Pioneers finished in 21st place at the NCAA West Regionals held at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Each day of the three-day tournament DU had solid scores from a couple players and then a couple not as solid scores from other players, which has been the problem all year. Denver entered the post-season tournament as the 23rd-seeded team out of 27 collegiate programs.
“It was a very disapointing trip. I dont think anybody played to their potential, but we learned a lot and I am looking forward to next year,” said junior Daniel Wax.
This was the fifth consecutive appearance for the Pioneers in the post-season, with their best previous finish coming in 2003 when DU finished in 15th.
The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on a top ten team advance to the NCAA Championships, which are being held in Virginia this year.
As a team, the Pioneers finished with a 54-hole score of 2-under par 862 for the tournament and 23 strokes back of the tenth place team.
After day one, DU was in 18th place after shooting a 3-under par 285. Day two proved to be a bit more of a challenge as they shot a 2-over par 290 and were in 20th place. The final day saw a 1-under par 287 and a 21st place finish.
Overall for the tournament Denver was led by lone senior Charlie Soule, who shot a 3-under par 213 (69, 70, 74) for the three days. Following was sophomore’s Jeff Koprivetz, with a 2-under par 214 (69, 70, 75) and Daniel Wax, who carded a 2-over par (74, 74, 70). Also, freshman Espen Kofstad scored a 4-over par 220 (73, 76, 71) and sophomore Chris Gilman had a 9-over par 225 ( 75, 78, 72) for the tournament.
The Pioneers will be returning all but one player from this seasons team for next year.
