Last week, I wrote a commentary about how the AUSA Senate was having its quarterly dinner meeting with DU’s Chancellor Bob Coombe at the same time as Colorado’s caucus. Unbeknownst to me, the chancellor sent out an e-mail Monday night, postponing the dinner to this week. Last week, the Senate did not meet at all due to the caucus.
Hearing this news, I couldn’t be more pleased. This isn’t an issue of being right or wrong, editorials are an opportunity for students to speak out and express opinions. I am proud to say that our campus, our school and our newspaper will allow us to question authority and express negative opinions about those in high positions.
I think that the fact that I was wrong is the best outcome. My objective in writing last week’s editorial was not to be perceived as a personal attack on Chancellor Coombe, but just that I think students should be proactive in the voting process, and anything outside of a student’s power that may deter him or her from participation is a problem.
It is wonderful that Chancellor Coombe changed the date for the dinner, and I am certainly not too proud to admit that Chancellor Coombe’s change in schedule expresses his interest in student needs and that he has acknowledged the importance of giving students this opportunity.
