The No. 21 DU gymnasts team defeated Texas Women’s University 195.625-191.650 in Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday by claiming all five event titles without the performances of senior All-American Jessica López.
“I feel really good about their performance tonight,” head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said.
“This is the first meet of the year that we finally had without having to count a fall. We still have definite areas to improve upon, but to do this without Brianna Springer and Jessica López, I thought was a great, great confidence builder for the team. And definitely a step in the right direction in the season-high.”
Springer missed the meet due to a hip injury while López was competing in the Tyson American Cup.
“The team is not made of one person,” said junior Kelley Hennigan. “I think we did a really good job of making up for Jess’s not being here. We have a lot of depth and we have a lot of people that got some good experience tonight.”
Hennigan and senior Lauren Garan led the way for the Pioneers by taking four of the five event titles. Garan took the No. 1 spot on the beam with a 9.850 and shared with Hennigan on the vault, each recording a 9.825.
In addition to the vault, Hennigan also took first on the uneven bars with a 9.825 and the all-around with a 39.250.
On the vault, senior Liz Meals took third with a 9.800, just ahead of freshman Louise Mercer in fourth with a 9.775. The Pioneers recorded a total 48.925 points on the vault.
In Denver’ second rotation, Mercer and senior Nikki Brown tied for first with Hennigan on the bars, and sophomore Amanda Johanson posted a fourth place score of 9.800, contributing to Denver’s 48.900.
Next up was the beam, as Denver posed a 48.875. In addition to Garan’s top performance, junior Ellen McCarthy and Hennigan placed in a fourway tie for second with matching 9.825s.
In the final rotation, Denver posted a 48.925 on the floor and sophomore Kristina Coccia and Mercer each posted a 9.800. Meals, Hennigan and Johanson tied for third, recording 9.775 a piece.
López missed Saturdays’ meet to compete in the Tyson American Cup in Chicago, where she placed 10th in the all-around with a score of 51.600. López, representing her native Venezuela, scored a 14.250 on vault, 13.300 on the uneven bars and a 12.100 on the floor exercise.
The Pioneers will travel to Pennsylvania this weekend to take on the University of Pittsburgh.
