DU’s women’s golf team won the Sun Belt Conference Title for the fourth time in Orlando Florida on April 18.

“We wanted to win and we did. We didn’t play that well in the beginning, so we knew that we could play better and we did,” said Stephanie Sherlock, a freshman.

Sherlock’s first place finish helped Denver record its best round of the tournament and seal the win. Sherlock shot a final-round 3-over par 75 Wednesday for a 54-hole score of 219 (3-over par). Along with the first place honors, Sherlock became the third DU individual Sun Belt medalist.

“It was any other tournament. That’s how I looked at it,” said Sherlock.

Sherlock’s teammate Emily Hoeper, a senior, finished the tournament in second place. She fired a 2-over 74, finishing with a 6-over par score of 222.

“Our individual competitive aspects helped us get better,” said Sherlock.

Things only got better for the Pioneers as Katie Kempter, a sophomore, who was one of only three players to shoot under par in the final round, shot her best in the final round. Kempter shot a 1-under 71 and finished the contest in fourth place. Sophomore Dawn Shockley was another DU player to finish in the top 10. She shot a final round of 77 giving her a 54-hole score of 228.

Sophomore Sara Djos completed the course in 26th place with a 54-hole score of 235.

“We have never made it to nationals, so we have a lot to play for,” said Djos.

To top off a wonderful regular season of golf, Sherlock, Kempter and Hoeper all were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Team and head coach Sammie Chergo was named SBC Coach of the Year.

“We are excited for the next contest because we have already seen this course. This is a tough course, so everyone will have to be ready to play,” said Hoeper about the upcoming NCAA Regionals.

“Our coaches will tell us to play relaxed and to stay focused. If we don’t place in the top 8 our season is over, so that puts a lot of pressure on everyone to step their game up,” said Hoeper about upcoming practices for the team.

The Pioneers look to continue their impressive season when they are back in action at the NCAA Regionals May 10.
