The Mile High Music Festival is on its way, bringing performers both popular and obscure. With it comes the relatively unknown duo Honeyhoney.
“We like bees,” said Suzanne Santos explaining why her and partner Ben Jaffe changed their name from Zanzibar Lewis. In reality, ” [Ironworks] wanted us to sound cooler.” Too bad Santos already had Zanzibar Lewis tattooed on her ribcage.
Santos and Jaffe’s eclectic bond was formed not too long ago when they started writing songs together. He supplies the guitar and piano, she the violin and banjo-but Santos supplies the voice that is somewhat raspy, somewhat twangy and undoubtedly inspired by Etta James.
“Sometimes we rock hard, sometimes we folk it out,” said Santos of their indie/pop sound. They chose to rock out on their first single “Little Toy Gun,” from their debut album, First Rodeo, which features five songs from their 2007 LP Loose Boots.
For them, First Rodeo is quite the accomplishment. “All the different ingredients combined to form an unexpectedly delicious rock sauce,” said Jaffe. “We’ve never been more proud of something we’ve been part of.”
