In response to the recent column lamenting DU’s lack of a baseball team I would like to strongly state that we DO have a baseball team.

No it is not DI, however we do engage in competitive collegiate club baseball.

Due to the high cost of varsity baseball programs universities all across the country have turned to the National Club Baseball Association in order to continue beloved baseball traditions.

On October 27, 1867, baseball made history as the first athletic event at DU. Although the varsity program no longer endures, as with most other universities in Colorado, baseball has returned to the University of Denver in the form of a club sport.

If you don’t think club level competition achieves athletic significance, take a look at the CSU Rams baseball club and then get back to me.

We have competed against a variety of DI and DII club teams since our club was initiated a year ago and we all share one thing in common: being serious about baseball.

Sure we could make a lot of noise about bringing varsity baseball back but, for now, we would rather play baseball.

The current club team was formed in January 2008. We were able to play all of our conference games last year ending with a record of 8-7.

This year we added fall baseball to our season and hosted the First Annual Denver Invitational of which we finished 2nd place. We have increased our schedule from 15 games last year to 32 games this year. Last week we travelled to Arizona to play some of the top DI club teams.

While we are still a fledgling club we have set our sights on building a solid program that will rival our neighboring defending DI club champs, the CSU Rams. You can check out our website through club sports at or visit our personal website.

Our season is now in full swing and we hope to see you all at our home games.
