The No. 39 DU women’s tennis team swept their in-state rival Colorado State, 7-0 in their match on Sunday afternoon at Miramont South Lifestyle Fitness in Fort Collins.

The Lady Pioneers dominated match play for the team’s fifth straight victory, improving their record to 6-3.

The Pioneers ruled both the singles and doubles courts with powerful serves and short points. Mallory Voelker, Annette Aksdal, Ute Schnoy, Julie Bauregger, Kyla Iwinski and Bhavani Tirumurti each defeated their Colorado State singles opponent by a wide, straight-set margin, with the closet match being Iwinski’s, who won 6-1, 6-4. On the doubles court, the Pioneers also won handily as the Voelker and Bauregger duo won at the No. 1 position by a score of 8-3. The pair of Iwinski and Schnoy continued the schooling of the Rams with an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 doubles position. Finally, the No. 3 doubles team of Aksdal/Tirumurti added to their perfect scorecard with another 8-3 victory over their feeble, helpless Ram opponents.

“In addition to having strength at the top of our line-up, we also have great depth,” head coach Amy Jensen said. “This is really what makes us so tough to beat. Our players show up to compete for every match and on every court and thus this team has created a reputation for consistency, professionalism and mental toughness.”

The DU women’s tennis team hopes to continue its merciless thrashing when they face the Colorado Buffalos this Saturday, Feb. 28th at the Pinehurst Country Club at 1 p.m.
