The No. 39 DU women’s tennis team defeated No. 34 Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday and Penn State University on Sunday, winning both matches by a score of 5-2.
Seniors Mallory Voelker and Ute Schnoy continued to lead the Lady Pioneers as they have all season, improving both of their singles records to 8-0, with two singles victories apiece. Also going undefeated in singles over the weekend was senior Annette Aksdal, who won at the No. 2 singles position in both matches.
In the first match against VCU on Saturday, the women Pioneers won all of their doubles matches and dropped two singles matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. In the No. 1 singles position, Voelker dropped her first set to VCU opponent, Ana Bara, 3-6 before thrashing her 6-0, 6-0 in the last two sets. Schnoy had the closest match on Saturday in a back-and-forth contest against VCU’s Laura Burns. After losing the first set 6-7, Schnoy battled back to win the last two sets 7-5, 6-4.
Against Penn State on Sunday, the Pioneer women continued their success on the doubles court, once again winning all of their matches on the courts, with the added 2.74 meters. As for the entire weekend on the doubles courts, Bhavani Tirumurti, Kyla Iwinski, Julia Bauregger, Schnoy and Voelker all went undefeated.
In singles play, DU lost matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions to the Nittany Lions. On the singles courts, Voelker, Aksdal and Schnoy continued to dominate, winning easily and securing victories at the No. 1 – No. 3 singles positions, respectively.
The Pioneer women hope to carry the momentum from these two victories up to Fort Collins on Sunday when they battle the Colorado State Rams.
The team returns home to Denver the following Saturday, Feb. 28 to challenge the CU Buffaloes.
