The No. 19 Pioneer women’s lacrosse team defeated the Canisius College Golden Griffs Sunday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

The Pioneers, who are 1-2 this season, began the game with a slow first half, leading the scoreboard by only one point for a halftime score of 5-4.

Denver picked up the pace in the second half, scoring 10 more goals with a final score of 15-7.

“I was pleased with our second half performance,” said head coach Liza Kelly. “We did a much better job with draw controls and with shooting.”

Seniors Megan Carver and Karen Morton and junior Ali Flury tallied four goals apiece. Carver and fellow senior Steph Coyne each had two assists. Coyne scored two goals as well.

Morton tallied 13 shots, and Flury followed closely with 12.

Denver finished with 49 shots, while Canisius finished with 14.

The Pioneers showed their support for breast cancer awareness by sporting pink jerseys as volunteers collected donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. On Friday, Denver lost to No. 3 Duke 17-8.

Duke is 2-0 for the season after defeating UC Berkeley on Sunday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Freshman Becca Steinberg recorded her first two goals as a Pioneer on Friday. Flury added a pair of goals as well.

The Pioneers travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to play Binghamton University on Friday.
