Middle East group meets

Intro to Buddhism

Campus Life will host a Nichiren Buddhism Introductory meeting tonight from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in room 1880, behind Jazzman’s Café in the Driscoll Student Center.

Human rights and history lecture

Professor Micheline Ishay will discuss “Human Rights and History: In Defense of a Critical Theory Approach” Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Cyber Café at Ben Cherrington Hall.

Natural disasters roundtable

“Myths and Realities of Natural Disasters and Management of the Decade” will be discussed Thursday between noon and 2 p.m. at the Cyber Café in Ben Cherrington Hall.

Lamont Chorale performance

The Colorado Music Educators Association will host a conference, attended by the Lamont School of Music staff, Thursday through Saturday at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

DU’s Lamont Chorale, conducted by Catherine Sailer, will perform for conference attendeeson Friday at 4:10 p.m.

Democracy in Latin America

Professor Scott Mainwairing will lecture on “Explaining the Differences in the Level of Democracy in Latin America” this Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Cyber Café at Ben Cherrington Hall.

Mainwairing’s research includes democratic institutions, democratization, political parties and the Catholic Church in Latin America.

He is currently the Eugene and Helen Conley Professor of Government and International Studies and director of the Kellogg Institute at the University of Notre Dame.

The lecture is sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Association at DU, and refreshments will be served.

Guitar quartet performs at DU

This Saturday, the Newman Center for the Performing Arts will present the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

The Grammy Award-winning quartet will perform in Gates Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. following a free “Behind the Curtain” lecture at 6:30.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets must be purchased for the performance. They range in price from $28 to $52 and may be purchased at the Newman Center Box Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at the Ritchie Center Box Office, open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling 303-357-2737 or by visiting ticketmaster.com.
