Ryan Fincham and Jimmy Nguyen were frustrated.
As leaders of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity, the fate of the annual SAE Paddy Murphy celebration rested on their shoulders – a weighty responsibility amplified by administrative details. Handling money and being on the lookout for counterfeiting had complicated ticket sales to the event’s concluding mansion party. The standard “table on Driscoll Bridge” routine just wasn’t cutting it. Luckily, SAE chapter advisor Sean Rowen had the answer.
Having experienced similar stress when arranging a large-scale event for AirLife Denver, where he worked as a flight nurse, Rowen created an online event registration Web site dubbed EZregister.com.
The Web site has the capacity to record every attendee, sell tickets, take payment and, best of all, provide the event host with a neatly organized spreadsheet detailing the status of each guest.
Impressed by the peace of mind EZregister.com offered, Fincham and Nguyen saw an opportunity for involvement and joined Rowen’s company as Sales and Marketing interns.
“It was just serendipity that our chapter advisor was doing it,” said Fincham. “He came to us and said, ‘Well, I have this cool thing I’m working on.”
Students of the Daniels College of Business (Fincham a management major and Nguyen a marketing major), the two lived in the SAE house over the summer, testing and improving the Web site’s navigation, gaining clients and creating a unique brand within the budding online registration industry.
“The company itself is new, it’s fresh. The industry is really fresh, too,” said Nguyen. “It’s how to turn a service that nobody knows about and bring that to the table to somebody and say, ‘Hey, we can help you out.'”
EZregister.com has aided a number of event planners already. The Web site houses events ranging from the upcoming Lunar New Year’s bash hosted by DU’s Vietnamese Student Association to a 7,000 person bike ride. A student club at the university Fincham attended while studying abroad in Australia used the Web site to sell tickets to a concert featuring two award-winning bands. They liked the ease of the Web site so much they’ll be using it again next year.
This quarter, the pair of entrepreneurs is marketing their site to clubs and organizations across the DU campus. EZregister.com will soon feature an application with the ability to upload a published event to Facebook.
“We’re just getting our foot in the DU door – getting more people to use us and making it easier to organize an event because we know how frustrating it can be,” said Nguyen.
One event the duo can count on – this spring’s SAE Paddy Murphy celebration.
