The women’s soccer team won its last regular season game 3-0 on Friday evening against North Texas, making the team champions of the Sun Belt Conference and the No.1 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.

Senior captain Taryn Hemmings scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute, and Mariah Johnston scored the second goal in the 40th minute, putting Denver ahead 2-0 by half time.

The North Texas goaltender held off DU in the second half with five saves, but senior Dana Schonberger managed to put the ball in the net in the last two minutes of the game, making the score 3-0.

DU dominated play and outshot North Texas 17-11.

“Going into this game we all knew that it was really important to come out with a win because we didn’t want to share the conference title,” said freshman Kari Storslett.

Denver (16-2-2, 9-1-1 SBC) was tied with North Texas (14-3-1, 8-2-1 SBC). and the game on Friday was the determining factor for which team would pull ahead and win the conference championship.

The Sun Belt Conference tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 5, and the eight top teams in the conference will play each other throughout the week to determine the top team. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed a spot in the NCAA tournament.

DU will play their first game against No. 8 University of Alabama Little Rock (4-6-1), on Wednesday.

Head coach Jeff Hooker said the team has certainly developed since the beginning of the season and has really learned how to work together.

“It took a while for the seniors to lead the rest of the team, on and off the field, but now they have really come together and are doing a great job,” Hooker said.

There are 28 girls on the team, 10 of which are seniors.

The Pioneers have been the Sun Belt Champions twice and have had five previous tournament titles.
