The Pioneers women’s soccer team lost to Western Kentucky (13-0-3) 1-0 on Friday and won against Middle Tennessee (9-7-2) 1-0 on Sunday at Pioneer Field.

On Friday, the No. 30 Pioneers, lost a Sun Belt Conference game for the first time this season against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

The first half was scoreless, but the Hilltoppers tallied the only goal of the game five minutes into the second half. The goal was a rebound off a free kick taken by Western Kentucky. Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder made the save fired off the free kick, but the ball slipped out of her hands, and Western Kentucky junior defender Morgan Thomas made the rebound six yards from the goal line.

With 17 seconds remaining in the game, Denver was awarded a penalty kick taken by freshman midfielder Bria Beardsley after senior forward Taryn Hemmings was leveled in the box. Beardsley’s shot hit the crossbar and sailed back to her, but the referees called a foul on Denver because a player who has just taken the penalty kick cannot touch the ball again before another player touches the ball first.

Denver outshot Western Kentucky 20-5, and Snyder tallied two saves.

On Sunday, the Pioneers defeated the Blue Raiders 1-0, to conclude their home games for the season. The game remained scoreless until junior forward Mariah Johnston scored the lone goal 14 minutes into the second half. Johnston scored just inside the box with one touch as freshman midfielder Beardsley crossed the ball from the right corner.

Denver outshot Middle Tennessee 21-6, and each team’s goalie tallied three saves apiece.
