The men’s soccer team tied 1-1 with the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (7-5-3) in a double over-time, non-conference game on Saturday at home.

Senior midfielder Joey Mathot scored his first goal of the season off a penalty kick two minutes into the second half. Freshman forward Jarod Stigall was taken down inside the box to receive the penalty kick. Mathot’s goal was his sixth of his career.

The Pioneers held their advantage until almost 65 minutes into the game, when Alabama A&M forward Abraham Kassaye scored on an open net. Sophomore goalkeeper Teale Stone intercepted a pass between Alabama A&M forwards at the top of the box, but dropped the ball, giving the Bulldogs the opportunity to even the score.

No further goals occurred in regulation time, so the game went into over-time, and then double over-time without a golden goal.

Denver outshot Alabama A&M 22-21 and both teams’ goalkeepers tallied eight saves for their teams.

Freshman goalkeeper Gavin Dawson played more than 36 minutes of the game, his first for his career at DU. Dawson made five saves during Saturday’s game.

Stone replaced sophomore goalkeeper Joe Willis after 13 minutes of the first half due to an injury.

The Pioneers are home next weekend to play San Jose State on Friday, Oct. 31st and Sacramento State on Sunday, Nov. 2nd on Pioneer Field.
