Ballot Issue on civil rights
Dr. Hava Gordon of the Sociology Department will give a luncheon lecture on the civil rights Initiative which will be on the ballot in November and will end the practice of affirmative action in Colorado.
The lecture will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Nagel Hall’s Overflow Dining Room.
AIDS Memorial Quilt display
The AIDS Memorial Quilt, presented by HIV/AIDS Awareness will be on display this week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
To celebrate the display events will take place every evening in Driscoll Ballroom
Tuesday at 7 p.m. there will be a screening of the film A Closer Walk. On Wednesday a candle light vigil will be held from 7-8 p.m. with food provided for attendees.
A fishbowl discussion will be held on Thursday and the quilt’s official display day is Friday.
All events are free and open to the DU community.
Debate viewing party
The next presidential debate viewing party will take place Thursday at 7p.m. at Sidelines Pub. The debate is on domestic and economic policy. Following the debate Political Science faculty members Seth Masket and Susan Sterett will debrief the issues discussed. This event is free and open to the DU community.
Harvard professor to speak
The Gender and Women’s Studies Department will present a talk by Dr. Sunshine Hillygus, from the Department of Government at Harvard University. Dr. Hillygus will offer a analytical perspective on voter decision making, candidate strategy and the dynamics of presidential campaigns based on her own work and research on the topic. The talk will be held in Sturm, room 286 from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday.
Pioneer Bowl
Pioneer Bowl, an all campus flag football tournament will be hosted on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Food Bank of the Rockies.
Early rounds of the tournament will be held on the soccer practice field. The championship round will take place at the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The event will feature music by KVDU and food from the DU Grilling Society. Free food will be provided to students who make donations of non-perishable food items at the event.
All students are invited to register teams and compete. Team registration costs $45 and there is a minimum of 7 people to a team. Registration can be completed online at www.du.edu./orgs/greeklife.
Transafrika
benefit concert
Transafrika Cultural Institutes, a Colorado non-profit organization will host a benefit concert on Saturday night in Davis Auditorium at 7 p.m. The concert will include bands like All Capitals, Sia, Grace Christus, Tempting Zen and “African Drum and Dance.” The event will also feature special guest Julie Pech, the “Chocolate Therapist.” All proceeds will support Transafrika’s humanitarian efforts in Africa. immigration talk
The Chaplain’s Office will host a discussion on religion and immigration which will address the question, ‘What do faith traditions have to say about this volatile political issue?’ on Tuesday, Oct 21 from 12 to 1 p.m. in Driscoll South. Film Exposition
The Paradise Theater and KVNF will present the International Experimental Cinema Exposition in Paonia, Colo. next Thursday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 26 at the HunterGather Gallery.
