Men’s soccer won both of its away games this weekend against San Jose State and Sacramento State, continuing the team’s undefeated streak in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference.

Freshman Jarod Stigall scored two goals for the Pioneers against San Jose State on Friday. He has scored three goals so far this season. Senior defender Colin Jones, DU’s leading goal scorer, tallied his fourth goal of the season at Friday’s game also.

The Spartans were quick to start, scoring after only two and a half minutes.

Denver evened the score only 20 seconds later as Stigall scored with a header after the ball skimmed off the goalkeeper’s hands from a cross by senior Joey Mathot.

The rest of the half remained scoreless, but in the 56th minute of the second half, the Spartans got the better of DU, scoring yet again.

With less than four minutes left in the game, Jones received a cross from sophomore defender Ryan Aweida for a header in the right corner of the goal.

Tied 2-2, Denver and the Spartans played into overtime. Almost eight minutes in, Stigall scored again, giving the Pioneers the 3-2 win.

The Spartans outshot DU 22-20, but sophomore goalkeeper Joe Willis tallied eight saves to secure the win.

“Jarod Stigall and all of the young guys stepped up big for us tonight. Stigall’s second goal in overtime was a big-time play that you don’t see very often from a freshman,” head coach Bobby Muuss said.

Stigall was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week yesterday.

Denver also defeated the Sacramento State Hornets on Sunday 2-1.

Aweida scored off a free kick from Mathot 20 seconds before the first half ended.

Four minutes into the second half, junior Collin Audley tallied a second goal off a pass from freshman Alex DeCosta.

Sacramento State scored their lone goal after almost 67 minutes.

The Hornets outshot Denver 16-15, and Willis made six saves for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers return home to play Alabama A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m.
