A malicious comment was written on the back of one of the I am/I will t-shirts which were distributed by the Queer/Straight Alliance (QSA) last Thursday, according to Joshua Jackson Robinson, president of QSA.

“My understanding was that somebody got a hold of a shirt and on the back they wrote, ‘I will put a roofies in your drink,'” Robinson said.

The ‘I am/I will’ t-shirt campaign was a part of QSA’s ‘Gay? Fine by Me,’ week which took place last week, coinciding with National Coming Out Day.

The t-shirts were distributed for free on Driscoll Bridge to undergraduates on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

The green shirts featured the words ‘I am’ followed by a white blank on the front where students could identify themselves and ‘I will’ on the back followed by another space where they could declare what they would do for gay justice.

The comment was reportedly written on the back of one of the t-shirts and worn by the student around campus.

“I am deeply offended by the fact that this happened.

“[This student] took something that was supposed to be a good purpose and goal and turned it into a joke, a joke that would have been so hurtful to anyone who had been date rape drugged or sexually assaulted,” said Robinson.

While no official action has been taken against the offender yet, an email advising DU faculty and staff to “intervene by telling the wearer how offensive it is to you and challenge them to remove it or cover it up,” was sent out the same day. B

“The purpose of this campaign is to show support for the LGBTIQ community at DU and these kinds of messages are deeply hurtful to our entire DU community,” said Karen Benson, the Director of Partners in Learning, who sent the email.

Although the official feedback has not been processed yet, Robinson maintains that, aside from this incident, the ‘I am/I will campaign’ was a success and will be continued in the future, with the possiblity of events in the months to come.

“We distributed 450 t-shirts. Out of 450 shirts if that really is the only incident that we’re hearing about, that’s pretty good.

“I think we have every intention of continuing on with the campaign next year and even continuing with other things this year in regards to the I am/I will campaign. People were talking about it and that was our main purpose,” Robinson said.

The comment appears to have been an isolated incident, Robinson said.
