Renee Montagne, host of National Public Radio’s (NPR) “Morning Edition,” will receive a DU journalism award next Thursday, April 17, in recognition of her efforts to report on disadvantaged communities.

“It was the wish of our founder, Ed Estlow, to acknowledge the First Amendment protections that allow journalists to report on stories that can truly inform in a democracy,” said Lynn Clark, director of the Estlow International Center for Journalism and New Media, which bestows the award annually.

“Renee’s stories have helped to shape public opinions about diverse communities whose stories often go unreported.”

Montagne is being presented with the Anvil of Freedom Award, which is given in recognition of a journalist who has made an outstanding contribution to democracy.

The award ceremony is part of the “Untold Stories: Truth and Consequences” event taking place in the Cable Center.

The day-long event aims to explore how storytelling can shape views and policies that affect disadvantaged communities.

Montagne will speak at the luncheon, from 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.

A student visit with Montagne is being held following the luncheon.

“Montagne’s work on stories like the homeless in LA and the Jena Six are great examples of why she is being honored with the Anvil of Freedom Award,” said Clark.

“Particularly when today’s journalism is criticized for focusing too much on celebrities and trivia, it’s important to bring honor and recognition to those who choose to report on issues like these.”

In addition, two morning workshops are being held, one on do-it-yourself media and the other focusing on how journalists can adapt to new media options.

Other workshops taking place in the afternoon include discussions on digital art, a live stream from Washington to discuss the upcoming election and issues surrounding homelessness in the greater Denver area.

The event “aims to give professionals and aspiring professionals an opportunity to learn new skills and reflect on issues regarding the representations of diverse communities,” according to a press release.

The event is co-organized by the Denver chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
