An April snowstorm did not stop Hillel, a Jewish organization, from celebrating Israel’s 60th birthday on Thursday afternoon. Israel’s independence was declared May 14, 1948.
The Israel @ 60 block party and free concert were scheduled on Driscoll Lawn, but due to the weather the event was moved inside to the Sidelines Pub, where Israeli-American hip-hop artist Kosha Dillz performed.
Students waved Israel flags while listening to music and celebrating the event, sponsored by Hasara Fellowships and MASA, both Israel activist programs.
“It’s an honor, my whole family’s from Israel,” said Dillz of the chance to help celebrate the anniversary.
Dillz is from New Jersey and grew up around the New York hip-hop scene. He created his unique style when he added his Jewish heritage to the music. He now performs at Israel events all over the country.
“I fight a different fight over here,” Dillz said of his music and the conflicts involving Israel. Last month he completed a national tour and clothing drive. He performed in more than 45 cities.
“These shows are fun, almost like a comedy show, but political,” said Dillz while performing.
The anniversary celebration also featured an Israeli trivia contest and taking a picture with a pretend camel. The “Bedouins” was set up to represent an Israeli dwelling, complete with Hookah and Israeli rugs and blankets.
Students learned about the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) which is the only army in the world that drafts both men and women.
“Israel is the homeland of our people, and we are celebrating its birth,” said Erin Searle, a member of Hillel.
