Tomorrow evening, 10 bands will face off at the Battle of the Bands in the Pub in the Driscoll Student Center from 6-10 p.m.
This event is the product of an ongoing collaboration between three student groups including Late Night at DU, DUPB and KVDU. The idea emerged when DUPB and KVDU began looking for openers for Kinetix, The Flobots and RJD2 at the May Days Music Festival on May 22. The three groups began working together to put on an event that would get a large number of students, faculty and staff involved in the selection process. Thus, the Battle of the Bands was created to decide the top two bands to kick off the music festival next month.
Bands signed up through the KVDU Web site (kvdu.org) during a two-week registration period. The only requirement was that the band members be students. A surprising number of bands signed up, forcing the event’s planners to select the top 10 based on a first-come basis and add another hour to the program.
The performers vary greatly in style, ranging from bluegrass to electronic. Each will perform for approximately 20 minutes while being judged by a panel of four judges from each group as well as a guest judge from the Lamont School of Music. The audience’s response will also factor into the results.
In addition, 100 food vouchers will be distributed throughout the evening.
