Experiences in Iran

The Graduate School of International Studies is hosting a discussion and lecture on Iran this Thursday. Donald and Marcia Liebich, the guest speakers, will share their experiences in modern-day Iran. Topics of discussion will range from the various identities of the Iranian people to the politics and government in Iran.

The lecture is being held from noon to 2 p.m. in GSIS, room 301. RSVP to Angie Bengtson at abengts2@du.edu. Lunch will be served.

The Colorado Campus Compact (CCC) is convening high school and college students from around the state this Friday for a dialogue titled, “RAZE the Machine: Rebuild our Democracy” in order of its 16TH anniversary.

Two student facilitators will lead a debate on why Colorado students are directly serving their communities at some of the highest rates in the country while their levels of political disengagement are also at an all-time high.

The discussion will end with recommendations to state legislators, foundations and the Campus Contact Board members on what must be done to reverse this trend.

Local government representatives will be in attendance alongside members of Project Vote Smart, Democracy Matters and Common Cause and the Civic Canopy. Overall, 300 college presidents, students, scholars and service-learning staff will be in attendance.

The event is taking place at the Chapel and University Event Center (located in the College of Business) at Johnson & Wales University. A panel discussion will be held from 9:30-11:45 a.m. followed by a lunch and a number of afternoon sessions.

Understanding the Catholic Church

Archbishop Chaput from the Archdiocese of Denver is coming to DU next Monday, Feb. 18 for a question and answer session about the Catholic Church.

The Archbishop will discuss issues of birth control, why women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church and why Catholics priests are not permitted to get married. He will also answer audience questions. The event is free and will take place in Lindsay Auditorium from 7-9 p.m.

Documentary on street children

A screening of the documentary “The Street Children of Kinshasa”

and a talk by director Gilbert Mulamba is being hosted by the Graduate School of International Studies next Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The documentary serves as an alarm for the crisis of street children, who can be found in poor nations around the world. The number of street children has risen dramatically in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) due to a number of factors. The issue threatens to hinder any development plans for the future of the DRC.

Palestinian refugees’ discussion

Abdelmahdi Al-soudi, a visiting professor from Jordan, will be leading a lecture and discussion on the various issues surrounding Palestinian refugees throughout the Middle East, including political, social and economic factors. The discussion is being held next Wednesday, Feb. 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Cyber Café in the Graduate School of International Studies.

Stories of refugees

Four refugees will be at DU next week to tell their stories. “Voices from Refugees” is an African Extravaganza Event taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 7-9 p.m. Refugees from Sudan, Burma, Somalia and Iraq will discuss their tales of fear, courage and triumph.

Kiss away cancer

Colleges Against Cancer is hosting its annual Kiss Away Cancer event on Thursday, Feb. 21. The fundraiser is being hosted at 5? club. Admission is $5, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
