As the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) college football season came to a close with LSU winning the national championship, many DU students feel that once again DU has been excluded. DU students feel that they already are being excluded from so many other things with our football program. For example, DU students very rarely partake in tailgating ceremonies before our football games, nor do we get to partake in exciting gossip involving which of our college football players is secretly getting paid the most. In fact the DU football program lacks players, coaches and even games for DU students to follow. With so much already taken away, a chance for the BCS title is the least students feel they deserve.

Having been undefeated since 1971, DU had high hopes for clinching a BCS bid for this 2007 season. However, the BCS system has once again proven how it is flawed in choosing the top college football teams in the country. The BCS claimed that DU did not have a “strong enough schedule” to reach a top spot, mostly due to the fact that we did not actually play any games at all. However, other students bring up the University of Hawaii which also had an undefeated season and did reach a top BCS bowl after playing a schedule which was actually proven easier than DU’s.

There has been much finger pointing as to whom is responsible for DU’s weak schedule and lack of BCS bid. Some say it’s the athletic director’s fault. Others blame players for “not showing up” when it comes to the key games of the season, or any game of the season, or practice for that matter. However, the largest factor in DU’s poor strength of schedule is most likely the league in which they play. Although the league is constantly growing, the IFC (Imaginary Football Conference) is an enormous hindrance to DU’s success. Contending with other teams that dropped their Division One football programs, DU faces schools such as the University of Chicago and Gonzaga University. The institutions that dropped their football programs earlier, like the U. of Chicago in did 1946 and Gonzaga did in 1941, always end up with the longer undefeated streaks, making them the consensus league leaders. Many complain that this system is fixed…literally. However, if DU plans to have a chance at future BCS bowl games, a new league must considered.

On a lighter note about DU football, we bring you some tips and suggestions for this year’s imaginary fantasy football picks. What is imaginary fantasy football? It is a system similar to ESPN or Yahoo’s fantasy sports system, but for teams such as DU in the Imaginary League. Players in this league make up players as well as their statistics for each weekly game. Tip Number One, advance yourselves as many pre-competition points as possible. Tip Number Two, stop reading this article before it gets any more ludicrous.
