This past season the women’s soccer team qualified for the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season and fell to Portland 5-0 in the first round.
The Pioneers finished the season with an overall record of 12-5-4, which included victories over then No. 1 Stanford, Air Force and North Texas in the Sun Belt Conference Championship game.
DU was led on offense this season by senior Jenna Billingsley who finished with nine goals and two assists for 20 points. Freshman Lauren Cavarra scored five goals and dished out two assists for 12 points, while sophomore Lizzy Carlson had four goals and four assists and sophomore Mariah Johnston recorded four goals and two assists for 10 points.
After the season, Billingsley was named to the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Central Region First Team, NSCAA / Adidas Scholar All-America University Division Second Team and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American University Division Third Team. Billingsley is a media arts design major and has a 3.84 GPA.
Men’s soccer: For the second consecutive season the Pioneers just missed qualifying for the NCAA tournament. Last season DU lost its final two conference games and New Mexico advanced to the tournament.
This season Denver had to beat New Mexico in its final game of the season to qualify. The Pioneers had numerous chances but could not find the net and tied 0-0 with the Lobos in double overtime to miss out again.
“I thought the guys played their hearts out, just disappointed, New Mexico had their opportunities and we had ours as well. We did this to ourselves earlier in the year, I am extremely proud of how the guys fought,” said Head Coach Bobby Muuss.
First-year Head Coach and MPSF co-coach of the year Bobby Muuss led the Pioneers to an overall record of 10-4-4 and 6-1-4 in the MPSF.
Junior Kyle Christensen led the team with nine goals and no assists for 18 points while sophomore brother Kellan Christensen finished with six goals and three assists for 15 points and junior Joe Mathot had four goals and five assists for 13 points.
Women’s volleyball: For the first time in program history, DU put together a 20-win season with a final record of 22-12. The season ended in the semifinals of the SBC tournament to Western Kentucky in four games.
Denver started the season just 4-7 and then went on to win 18 of the next 23 games.
The Pioneers were led by senior Kim Muller, who was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association South Region honorable mention squad and all-SBC First Team.
