It is a perfect day. The sky is clear and bright, theres a light breeze rustling the leaves that are edged with yellow. On a day like this, what could be better than a visit to the farmers market on Old South Pearl Street?
Vendors line the road, with the season’s freshest fruits, vegetables, and products displayed in neat rows or tall piles. Live music is playing in the background as kids run to play at the various family-oriented booths. It is a relaxing, slow moving event that draws hundreds of people every week.
The Market is held every Sunday untill Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on South Pearl Street between Iowa and Florida.
Featured vendors from all over Colorado who sell produce, natural meats, flowers and homemade tortillas, to name a few of the offerings.
Some farmers, like Steve Ela from Ela Family Farms travel all the way from Hotchkiss every week, a drive that takes six hours in his loaded truck. For Ela and his family, the trip is worth it. Unlike fruit you would buy at the grocery store, the fruit Ela Family Farms bring is local, organic and unbeatably fresh.
“I can pick a peach that is tree ripe because it won’t sit forever,” said Ela, who emphasizes that the fruit is picked, immediately packed in the truck, and brought to the market
“It’s great to be able to walk over here from campus, grab a homemade tamale, and eat all the free samples,” said DU student, Shane Carrick.
The easy accessibility of the farmers market makes it a great place for DU students to go for a Sunday afternoon and some treats as well as to pick up Colorado-grown fruit.
