The DU men’s soccer team captured the 2007 Husky Fever Classic this past weekend in Seattle, Wash. in untraditional fashion. The Pioneers opened the tournament with a 4-1 statement victory over No. 22 Washington on Friday in front of 761 people and then dropped a 2-1 decision to Portland on Sunday afternoon.
Ten minutes into the match against the Huskies junior Joe Mathot recorded his third goal of the season off of an assist from sophomore Kellan Christensen. Just seven minutes later Christensen got a goal of his own to put the Pioneers up 2-0. Washington responded with a goal of their own to make the score 2-1 DU at the half.
Seven minutes into the second half junior Colin Jones headed in a pass from Mathot to extend the lead to 3-1. The Pioneers sealed the deal just 11 minutes later when Christensen passed a ball to senior Colby Pearce and he one-timed the shot into the back of the net.
DU outshot Portland 12-5 in Sunday’s match-up, but still fell to the Pilots 2-1 in the tournament finale.
Portland scored 35 minutes into the first half and 3 minutes into the second half to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Pioneers got on the board with 8 minutes left when Mathot scored on a free kick from the top of the box for his fourth goal of the season.
Non-conference play has wrapped up for the DU men’s soccer team and well maybe that is a good thing, because consistency has not exactly been their best friend throughout. So far this season there results look like this: win, loss, win, loss, win, win and loss.
Denver now has a week off to rest and prepare for the upcoming Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference games that began October 5 at New Mexico.
