With a 20-6 win over conference rivals the Oregon Ducks on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, DU’s woman’s Lacrosse team clinched the number one spot in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
“Winning this game is a good opportunity to go into the tournament on top,” said sophomore Steph Coyne.
“This game showed what place we deserve to be in,” said Coyne.
Freshman Ali Flury scored a game-high five goals to help Denver maintain a 7-3 lead at halftime. The Ducks started the second half of play with a 3-1 run, with two of their goals coming from Kate Fleming, who led Oregon with four goals in the game. Once Oregon cut the lead to only two, Denver was forced to call a timeout.
“We were getting a little frustrated but after the timeout we relaxed and started to play better,” said sophomore Molly Snively.
Just 35 seconds after the timeout, senior Kristie Leggio scored her second of four goals.
“Our attack is really versatile this year and we all just trust each other, so that makes things much easier,” said Coyne.
After two straight goals from the Pioneers, they went on a 4-0 run in the span of only 57 seconds. With the addition of her four goals in this game, Leggio scored her 54 goal on the season to mark the third-most in Pioneers’ history. She also recorded her 36 assists, which are second only to the record 37 she tallyed last season.
Besides Leggio’s four goals and Flury’s five, the Pioneers also received three goals and assists from junior Megan Carver and three goals from Coyne.
With the win the No. 16 Pioneers improve their record to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in MPSF conference play, while Oregon dropped to 11-6 overall and 4-1 in MPSF play. DU has also clinched the regular-season title in the MPSF.
“The main thing is focusing on our game, working out the kinks and the little things to improve our game,” said Coyne.
The Pioneers will wrap up their regular season play against California at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
